Definition: Produced from sea vegetation, carrageenan is an additive used in many processed foods and other products as a stabilizer, emulsifier and thickening agent. Similar to other plant-derived gelling products like agar agar in chemical make-up and function, carrageenan is found in many non-dairy milk alternatives and store-bought dairy-free ice creams and cheese substitutes.
