If you're new to a dairy-free or vegan diet, you might be a little overwhelmed by all of the dairy-free ice cream options available to you in the freezer aisle. This list is a great place to start; it contains my favorite dairy-free ice creams, from soy-based to rice-based to coconut-based, and all are deliciously dairy-free and vegan.
So Delicious
If you're looking for a sweet, refreshing treat that won't add on too many calories, I highly recommend Turtle Mountain's So Delicious in Creamy Vanilla, which has been a go-to dairy-free ice cream for me for years. It's lighter than most dairy-free ice creams with only 3 grams of fat per serving, so it's the variety I like to keep around for those impromptu vegan root beer floats and vanilla milkshakes.
The So Delicious line has several other tasty flavors to choose from, but here are my favorites:
For those of you who are also allergic to soy, Turtle Mountain also has a So Delicious line of coconut milk-based ice creams, sorbets, and frozen novelties. Visit their website to read more.
Purely Decadent
Those folks over at Turtle Mountain really know what they're doing, which is why I just have to write about another phenomenal line of Turtle Mountain dairy-free ice cream products: Purely Decadent. As rich as it sounds, this line of amazing vegan ice creams is not for those on a diet, but it's probably the closest vegan thing to actual ice cream I've ever had. The Purely Decadent line offers both soy and coconut-based ice creams, and both are amazing.
My favorite flavors:
Tofutti
I love Tofutti's pints of dairy-free soy ice cream, but their best product, in my opinion, is hands-down their Tofutti Cuties in Vanilla, which are essentially the most adorable little vegan ice cream sandwiches you've ever seen.
That said, every once and while I treat myself to one of their ice cream pints, usually either in Better Pecan or Vanilla Almond Bark.
Double Rainbow
Although Double Rainbow also produces a line of dairy-based ice creams, their soy ice creams are some of the best I've tried. They only offer 5 flavors, but all are melt-in-you-mouth amazing:
Almond Dream
Just recently, I was overjoyed to learn that Taste the Dream introduced the first line of almond-based ice cream products, Almond Dream. I was even more excited when I tasted them and found out that they are, in a word, dreamy. Right now, there are only 4 flavors in Almond Dream's line of dairy-free ice creams, and although they're all good, I was most impressed with the Cappuccino Swirl.
Organic Rice Divine
Good Karma Foods' line of rice-based ice creams, Organic Rice Devine is nothing short of amazing. Not only are they delicious, but they're dairy-free, vegan, and gluten-free, so they accommodate a variety of diets. If you can only try one flavor, definitely pick up a pint of their Mudd Pie. With a Columbian coffee base, swirls of chocolate fudge, almond pieces and chunks of chocolate cookies, this vegan ice cream is divine.
Luna and Larry's Coconut Bliss
Soy-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free, Luna & Larry's line of coconut-based ice creams, Coconut Bliss is as deliciously charming as the personalities on their website. Like most coconut ice creams, Coconut Bliss ice creams are not low in fat, but if you take a bite, you probably won't care.
Of their 14 flavors to choose from, these are must-tries in my book:
