Olive Oil Cookies

These classic cookies are some of my favorite dairy-free cookies for any holiday or occasion, whether it's a formal winter holiday party or a casual afternoon teatime.

Makes about 4 dozen cookies

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes


  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 cup white wine
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds, plus more for coating if desired
  • 1/2 t. cinnamon
  • 1/4 t. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 t. salt
  • 5 1/2 cups flour, plus more as needed
  • 2 t. baking powder


1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the olive oil, sugar, wine, sesame seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. In another bowl, mix together the flour and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the wet, adding more flour as needed until forming a soft dough that is neither dry nor sticky. Knead for several minutes until elastic. Divide the dough into about 4 dozen balls. Roll each into strips and shape into spirals. Top with sesame seeds if desired. Bake for about 25 to 28 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool completely on a wire cooling rack.

These cookies are delicious and admired by the great Greek biscuit makers I know! I have been asked for the recipe countless times. You can try red wine, too, and you don't need to make them into spirals - I find that dividing the mixture into twelve large 'loaves' and then cutting the biscuits into 'slices' is just as effective, really quick and still so tasty! A real find - I recommend this recipe unreservedly.
